The former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam has suggested that the Supreme Court should transform its present mission into an ‘e-judiciary' mission. In his address after conferring the Degree of Doctor of Laws awarded by the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) to V. R. Krishna Iyer, former Supreme Court judge, here on Wednesday, Dr. Kalam said that the e-judiciary initiative within the overall justice delivery system should help in transforming the court service in to a better focused system in meeting the needs of the citizens.
Stating that the proposed action for connecting all the 15,000 courts in the country from the district court to the Supreme Court will further enhance the efficiency of the judicial system, Dr. Kalam said that the objective of the e-judiciary should be to ensure the seamless flow of information. In his acceptance speech on the occasion, Mr. Iyer said that the social philosophy of the judges should be investigated before appointing them. He said that the selection of a wrong man (as judge) would be a great danger for the judiciary. Jasti Chelameswar, Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court and Chancellor of NUALS; and N.K. Jayakumar, Vice Chancellor spoke.

Later in the day, inaugurating the Sankara Centre for Research in Information Technology and the M.Tech. programme in computer science at the Adi Sankara Institute of Engineering and Technology in Kalady near here, Mr. Kalam called for introduction of a value-based education system along with research so as to improve the technical education scenario of the country.
