The National Commission for Scheduled Castes panel chief calls for quota in private sector

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has urged the Central government to initiate affirmative action in providing reservations to the deprived sections in the private sector.

Commission Chairman P.L. Punia termed the claims reservations could not be implemented in private sector a “misnomer.” “They [the private sector] depend on the public sector for loans and the public sector is a major contributor to their equity. They have a responsibility to society,” he said.

Dr. Punia, who was on his maiden visit to the State after assuming charge, told journalists here on Wednesday that he would meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh shortly seeking expeditious action on the issue. “When deprived sections are taken care of even in developed countries like the United States, why can't we have the same provisions here?” he asked.
