Sexual harassment at workplace spurs woman's suicide

A young 21-year-old woman employee of a courier company in Khokhra committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence at Santdev Tenement on Sunday morning.

Family members of the victim alleged that the girl worked in the courier company since the last two years and was constantly harassed by the company manager, Divakar Mishra. Family members allege that Mishra, a married man, demanded sexual favours from the girl. "The girl protested against Mishra's advances. Recently, the accused allegedly became aggressive and gave the girl an ultimatum - either agree to his proposal or quit the job," said police. According to sources the girl on Sunday morning committed suicide by hanging herself at her house leaving her old parents in shock. When Mishra learnt about the suicide he rushed down to the girl's house with his wife and son.

Police said, "Mishra threatened to self-immolate after setting his family members ablaze if we believe that the girl had committed suicide because of his harassment. Mishra was later detained and taken to the Khokhra police station for questioning."

Khokhra police sources said they are probing allegations of sexual harassment against Mishra. The victim's body has been sent for post mortem to the Civil Hospital.
