VHP files PIL for protection of Shiva temple in Palitana

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has approached Gujarat high court by filing a PIL, seeking directions to the Bhavnagar district authorities to allow them access to a Shiva temple located on Shetrunjay hills in Palitana, which is considered to be a most sacred pilgrimage place for the Jain community. Sources said that VHP has complained that the authorities and the Jain community do not allow anybody to stay on the hills at night. The temple is thus deserted with no caretaker (pujari) to attend to it or protect it at night. They fear desecration of the idol in such a situation. To avoid this, access to the Shiva temple should be allowed at night.

During the hearing, the high court allowed a leading Jain trust - Kalyanji Anandji Trust - to be joined as a party respondent in the litigation. The affairs of the temples located on this hill are managed by this trust
