Rupees gets a symbol, India joins elite currency club

INDIA

Currency: Rupee Designer: IIT Bombay postgraduate D Udaya Kumar

ORIGIN: It is an amalgam of Devanagri ‘Ra’ and Roman capital ‘R’ without the stem.Though the symbol will not be printed or embossed on currency notes or coins, it would be included in the ‘Unicode Standard’ and major scripts of the world to ensure that it is easily displayed and printed in the electronic and print media. Unicode is an international standard that allows text data to be interchanged globally without conflict.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: Udaya Kumar’s design is based on the tricolour, with two lines at the top and white space in between. The winning entry was one of five shortlisted in the public competition announced in March 2009. Designers were given a brief to come up with a symbol that captures the ethos and culture of India.
