Cops arrest man for blackmailing Anoushka

New Delhi/Mumbai: Sitar player Anoushka Shankar, daughter of legendary musician Pandit Ravi Shankar — who was been allegedly blackmailed over some private pictures by a businessman for the past six months — can now breathe easy. The alleged hacker was arrested in Mumbai by the Special Cell of Delhi Police.
Sources said that the accused — 29-year-old Junaid — was allegedly blackmailing the young sitarist over some of her photographs which he accessed after hacking into her email account. The arrest came after investigations into a complaint by Ravi Shankar to the Union home ministry in August. The home ministry had asked Delhi police commissioner YS Dadwal to look into the case.
Curiously, top police officials in Mumbai appeared ignorant. “The Special Cell of the Delhi Police has picked up the culprit. To our knowledge, he hasn’t been picked up from Mumbai,” Mumbai joint commissioner (crime), Rakesh Maria, said.
Official sources said Junaid appeared to have known Anoushka for sometime and was nursing a grudge against her. “It seems Junaid came in contact with Anoushka in December last year when she came to Mumbai. A casual friendship resulted. We are investigating what led Junaid to send these mails in April-May” said a police source.
A senior sleuth claimed the man allegedly sent six emails to her demanding money for not making the photographs public. In one email, he had demanded $100,000. Initially police thought the photographs were accessed when it was being repaired by a service centre. A spokesperson for Anoushka said she was not willing to comment as investigations were on.
