HC increases jail term in tiffin blast case


Four Convicts’ Terms Lengthened From 10 Years To Life, One Acquitted
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court on Monday enhanced the jail term of four persons convicted in the 2002 tiffin bomb blast case from 10 years to life imprisonment, while acquitting one.

A division bench of Justice Jayant Patel and Justice HB Antani has enhanced punishment for Anas Machiswala, Mohammed Habib Hawa, Kalim Ahmed and Mohammed Hanif Pakitwala, while acquitting Maulvi Ahmed Hussain Mansuri.

A special Pota court, on May 15, 2006, had convicted five people — Anas Machiswala, Mohammed Habib Hawa, Kalim Ahmed, Maulvi Ahmed Hussain Mansuri and Mohammed Hanif Pakitwala — with a 10-year jail term holding them responsible for the blast.

The convicts had filed an appeal against the Pota court judgment, while the state government urged the high court to enhance the quantum of the punishment handed over by the Pota court in 2006.

The Pota court had discharged four persons and tried 17 others. of these, the court acquitted 12 persons, and convicted five.

Thirteen persons were injured when three bombs, out of five planted in tiffins in AMTS buses, went off on May 29, 2002.

Twenty-one persons were chargesheeted in this connection by the city crime branch. They were accused of hatching conspiracy for riots reprisal.

All of them were booked under special Pota laws, Explosive Substance Act as well as IPC.
