Former president of Medical Council of India (MCI), Ketan Desai, the Supreme Court has refused to give another opportunity

SC denies Ketan Desai more time

Ahmedabad: In a case of setback for former president of Medical Council of India (MCI), Ketan Desai, the Supreme Court has refused to give another opportunity to him to explain his stand in connection with a petition challenging his unopposed election to the Gujarat University (GU) senate.
The petition was filed by a voluntary organization - People for Better Treatment through its president Dr Kunal Saha, questioning Desai’s election on the ground that he was not eligible to contest the election because his medical licence has been suspended by MCI and he also faced criminal charges.
Earlier, Gujarat high court dismissed Dr Saha’s petition filed in this regard. Saha then moved SC challenging the HC order making Desai one of the respondents in the litigation. The apex court sought explanation from respondents on the basis of the petition, but when no reply was filed by Desai for a considerable period, SC decided not to give further time for response and noted, “Sufficient time has been granted to the respondents for filing counter affidavit, no further time can be granted.”
Dr Saha claims that MCI has suspended Desai’s medical licence in October last year for professional misconduct and violation of medical ethics. CBI arrested Desai for taking bribe from a private medical college as MCI president. Later, he was also booked in a case of disproportionate assets.
